Training a Puppy with Snack

Health & Wellness

All dogs must be current on age appropriate vaccines. We require Rabies, Distemper and Bordetella vaccines for all dogs attending our training classes or one on ones. All dogs over 8 months old must be spayed or neutered and female dogs under 8 months old cannot attend any classes or one on ones while in heat.

Training also involves the use of treats or kibble as a main motivator in training so please inform staff if your dog has an allergy or sensitivity so we can be aware and adjust what type of training treats we are using. Make sure you are taking extra training treats into consideration for daily calorie intake and adjust meal sizes accordingly.

Behavior

Your dog must be able to be handled by staff. If they attend group classes, they must be able to be friendly with other dogs and show no signs of fear/stress/aggression. If they do, you will be asked to switch exclusively to one on one training. Depending on the behavior, some dogs may not be able to be handled even on a one on one level and we would refer you to other training services that can help on a case by case basis.

Trainers Recommendations

Your trainer will know the best course for what classes and types of training would be best for your dog. If the trainer would prefer to schedule one on ones vs group classes for your dog, we stand behind their recommendation. Not every dog is suited for group classes. Schedule a consult with a trainer to get an idea of what is best for your dog.

Training Style

We understand there are many types of training styles out there, but we here at Pet Retreat believe in using a Fear Free positive reinforcement only style for training. All of our trainers are fear free certified and will only use those techniques to train the dogs that visit the training department. The use of negative reinforcement or punishment will not be used by our staff and people attending classes or one on ones.
